What the advice says

• The US Department of State advisory is Level 2 - Exercise Increased Caution (dated 2026-06-09); this and the UK FCDO advice are country-level, not specific to Ankara.
• The UK FCDO notes a high threat of terrorist attack in Turkey, with most attacks occurring in southeast Turkey, Ankara, and Istanbul; past incidents include an October 2024 attack on a Turkish Aerospace Industries facility 40km northwest of central Ankara that killed five and injured 22.
• Demonstrations and protests are occurring in Istanbul and other cities, including outside Israeli diplomatic missions in Ankara; the FCDO advises avoiding all demonstrations and leaving the area if one develops, since police have used tear gas and water cannons.
• The FCDO warns of counterfeit alcohol and methanol poisoning cases in Turkey, including in Ankara, from illegally produced spirits and counterfeit branded bottles; even small amounts of methanol can be fatal and it cannot be detected by taste or smell.
• Travelers should be cautious of strangers offering to change money, take them to restaurants or nightclubs, or offering food and drinks, as these could be spiked; always buy and watch your own drinks.
• The FCDO advises against unofficial taxis and recommends using registered, metered taxis or app-based and pre-booked services, noting the vehicle registration before entering.
• Solo travelers and those out after dark should stay aware of surroundings, keep belongings secure against pickpocketing in tourist areas, and avoid sharing personal details such as accommodation information with strangers.
