What the advice says

• The US State Department advisory for Thailand is Level 1 - Exercise Normal Precautions, dated July 7, 2026. This is a country-level rating, not specific to Bangkok.
• The UK FCDO advisory is also issued at the country level rather than for Bangkok specifically, and was last updated October 12, 2026. It notes that terrorist attacks could occur anywhere in Thailand, including tourist destinations, hotels, shops, and transport infrastructure, so travelers should stay aware of surroundings and follow local media and authorities.
• The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the four southernmost provinces near the Malaysian border due to regular terrorist attacks and martial law in those areas, though this does not apply to Bangkok itself.
• Pickpocketing and bag-snatching, including by people on motorbikes, are noted risks, so solo travelers should keep valuables secure and take extra care with belongings when out after dark or in unfamiliar areas.
• The FCDO states that violent crime rarely involves tourists, but several foreign nationals were victims of gun violence in Bangkok in 2018, and it advises avoiding isolated areas alone, especially at night.
• Drink spiking and drug-assisted sexual assault occur in tourist areas, and there have been deaths from methanol poisoning in alcoholic drinks in Thailand. Solo travelers should avoid unattended drinks, decline drinks from strangers, and arrange transport home in advance rather than accepting lifts in unlicensed vehicles.
• The FCDO warns against handing over your passport as a guarantee, for example to motorbike or jet-ski rental businesses, and highlights job scams in which people have been illegally transported abroad after accepting offers that seemed too good to be true.
