What the advice says

• The US State Department rates India at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, in guidance dated June 16, 2025; this advisory applies to the whole country, not specifically to Ahmedabad.
• The UK FCDO advice is also issued at the country level and notes a high threat of terrorism in India, including at hotels, transport hubs, markets and tourist attractions.
• Strikes, political rallies and demonstrations happen frequently in India and can turn violent, especially around elections, so travelers should avoid protests and large gatherings and follow local authorities' guidance.
• Crime such as pickpocketing and scams targeting foreign nationals occurs in tourist areas, and criminals have used the details of official diplomatic offices in cybercrime and confidence scams.
• There have been reports of drink and food spiking as well as methanol poisoning in alcoholic drinks in popular destinations, so travelers should avoid unattended drinks and drinks offered by strangers.
• The FCDO notes a risk of sexual assault, including against foreign women, and advises avoiding isolated areas such as beaches when alone at any time of day.
• As with any destination, solo travelers should stay aware of their surroundings, especially after dark, and keep copies of identity documents separate from the originals.
